Housekeeping Excellence Training Programme

Eight practical modules for housekeeping and laundry teams

For: Room attendants, laundry staff, team leaders and supervisors.

A practical programme for the people who do the daily, hands-on work of housekeeping and laundry. It brings together the standards, procedures and behaviours that make the difference between a room that is simply clean and a room that genuinely feels cared for.

Every module is built around what staff actually do on shift, not abstract theory. Each one follows the same structure: purpose, learning outcomes, key topics, practical activities, key takeaways, and a personal reflection that connects the training to each person's own work.

How it is delivered

  • Eight modules, delivered in order in facilitated sessions, each building on the one before
  • Practical activities in every module: demonstrations, role-plays, supervised room make-up, linen sorting and hazard spotting
  • Key ideas explained in simple Chichewa during delivery, so every participant understands and takes part
  • A participant manual each person keeps as an on-the-job reference
  • Built around your property: where the manual refers to the hotel's approved procedure, your own standard is used

The eight modules

  1. 1

Housekeeping excellence, guest engagement and service culture

Why housekeeping shapes how guests feel about the whole hotel, the behaviours of a strong service culture, and how good service leads to repeat visits and revenue, without ever pressuring guests to spend.

    • Listen, understand, respond, then assist or escalate
    • Respecting guest privacy
    • Every interaction matters
  2. 2

    Guest room service operations

Make-up room service following a set step-by-step sequence and checklist, turn-down service for the evening, handling guest requests, and a final inspection before leaving every room.

    • A consistent room-cleaning sequence
    • Turn-down service
    • Listen, clarify, respond, act, refer, follow up
  3. 3

    Laundry and linen management

The linen cycle from collection to storage, good laundry practice, reading textile care symbols, quality checks before linen returns to guest use, par-stock and stock control, and safety in the laundry.

    • Dirty and clean linen kept apart
    • Reducing loss, damage and wastage
    • Common laundry hazards and how to control them
  4. 4

Chemical handling, safety and risk management

Using, storing and disposing of cleaning chemicals safely: reading labels, the nine GHS hazard pictograms, Safety Data Sheets, protective equipment, and what to do after a spill or exposure.

    • Never mixing chemicals without authorisation
    • Identify, assess and control the risk
    • Correct storage and labelling
  5. 5

    Team effectiveness and team building

Clear communication, trust and respect, working well in a diverse team, supporting colleagues under pressure, and resolving disagreements professionally.

  6. 6

    Train-the-trainer and workplace coaching

Selected staff and supervisors learn to coach colleagues: explain, demonstrate, let them practise, observe, give feedback, and practise again. Trainer candidates are assessed on a real task before being confirmed.

  7. 7

    Assessment, reflection and continuous improvement

A practical assessment of what participants can actually do, a personal action plan (start, stop, continue, and where support is needed), and a team commitment to the standards they want to be known for.

  8. 8

Handling guest complaints and service recovery

The L.E.A.R.N. method: Listen, Empathize, Apologize, Resolve, Notify and document. Staying calm with an upset guest, knowing when to escalate, and closing every complaint properly.

Assessment and certification

Participants are assessed through practical demonstration, role-play and observation, focused on what they can actually do rather than only what they remember.

The programme is verified and certified by GECD-UK.
